Spatial Literacy

COOL Terms

algorithms A program or process to be followed when performing calculations or other problem-solving operations.
bathymetry The measurement of water depth at various places in a body of water.
continuous data Data collected without interruption and with connected data points through space and/or time. It provides a continuous picture of what is happening in an area over time.
discrete data Data that is not collected continuously through space and/or time. It provides snapshots of what is happening in a particular place at one time.
land cover The physical material at the surface of the earth.
quadrat A square (of either metal, wood, or plastic) used in ecology and geography to isolate a sample, usually about 1 meter squared or 0.25 meters squared.
spatial Across space.
stakeholder A person or group who is affected by the actions of another person or group.
submerged aquatic vegetation Vegetation that lives at or below the water surface.
systematic sampling Sampling according to a fixed plan.
temporal Over time.
turbidity The cloudiness or haziness of a liquid caused by individual particles (suspended solids) that are generally invisible to the naked eye, similar to smoke in air.
watershed The area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place.
wavelength The distance from crest to crest or trough to trough of a wave.
