You have learned that in a watershed, dissolved substances and oftentimes pollution are carried downstream. Pollution carried by the warm freshwater river plume can affect marine life off the New Jersey coast.

 

If pollutants persist in shallow bays for a long time, a process may occur that creates areas with very low oxygen. Marine life need oxygen in the water in order to survive.
